Riding simple bikes once brought a smile to your face every time you threw a leg over the cross bar and headed out onto the trails. The Summit 26 MTB Classic recreates those carefree days of mountain biking with an event dedicated to having fun on an old bike.
Now in its third year, the Summit 26 MTB Classic is a multi-discipline off-road retro event, exclusively for mountain bikes built in the last century and organised by Summit MTB Club. In 2017 it takes place in Lotts Wood, Hyde Heath near Amersham (see map below) on Sunday, 1st October starting at 09.00 and finishing around 14.00.
Recalling the multi-discipline format of the sport’s early days, the Summit 26 starts with a tricky trials section going straight into a 2-mile off road time trial. Riders then tackle a fun bomb hole challenge against the clock, before the finale of the event, a two by two hillclimb race. All sections are timed and feature penalties to decide the category winners.
The Summit 26 is a revival event for classic 26” wheel mountain bikes built in the last century, from rigid mountain bikes through to the first full sussers. There were very few disc brakes around in the 1980s and 90s so we are expecting to see all bikes stopped by rubber blocks. Check out the gallery below for some inspiration.
Riders are encouraged to dress up and ride in multi-coloured kit of the day to help us recreate the unique atmosphere of early mountain biking.
